Audio & Video Magnetic Tape Repair & Recovery
We make Repairs to all Tape formats
Sticky Tape Syndrome
When Magnetic Tape ages it can develop The Sticky Tape Syndrome. This is when the bonding that holds the magnetic oxide to the cellular breaks down and causes the tape to become sticky and unable to transport in the machine properly. This can occur even if the tapes are properly stored and usually can occur after 15 to 20+ years of age. We have successfully recovered many tape formats from ¾ Umatic, VHS, & Betamax dating back to the Mid 1970’s.
Not all tapes develop this problem as we have transferred many tapes 20+ years old without a problem. It all depends on the quality of the original tape manufacturing. Manufacturing had greatly improved over time.
With our process we recover the tape then transfer the Audio or Video Content to Digital stored on a USB Flash Memory Stick, Portable Hard Drive or SSD Drive depending on the size of Video File(s) and Customer preferences.
To ensure a good clean transfer sometimes it is necessary to run the tape through the recovery process multiple times. We use a highly specialized process that is safe and does not damage the tape. Each recovery process takes approximately 4 to 8 Hours. In our process we do not oven bake the tapes or use any chemicals or come in contact with the magnetic tape surface what so ever. Those methods are the most common methods used by other places offering the service.
The basic charge for recovery per tape is $65.00 to $120.00 plus the transfer to digital price plus Tax.
If you suspect that you have tapes that don’t play anymore or get a poor unstable image playback then drop off or send your tapes to us for a free inspection and price quote.
Please note that the tape repair/recovery service is available for our transfer jobs only.
For Copyright Media we require written approval from the Copyrights Holder.
Please note that the purpose of the recovery is to be able to transfer the media to digital. There is no guarantee as to how long the tapes will last after. The sticky tape syndrome will re-occur through time due to aging.
